At The Flix with @Timmy666 – Best of 2014
So, here it is, my list of favourite films of 2014 followed with some notable omissions of films I have yet to catch up with that might well have figured in a top 10 list too.
Leading my list is the mesmerisingly beautiful and haunting sci-fi Under The Skin. Jonathan Glazer’s film is one of the most daring and disturbing films of the past few years. It connects the bravura of Roeg or Lynch or Kubrick with a kind of gritty urban realism that Ken Loach would revel in. Add to this scintillating mix, Scarlett Johansson in her bravest role, the film’s genius is in mixing a recognisable face as an alien in an alien environment. Alone and isolated, this is an alien that feeds off humans only to become prey to humanity itself – the alien starts to embrace it, and falls victim to the best and worst of human behaviour.
Note to the Birmingham Favourites editor – you will feel for this alien especially as she can’t even eat a slice of cake! She tries. [Just not trying hard enough. If you want something (cake) badly enough, you’ll find a way to taste it – Ed]
