God’s Pocket (15)

Natural expectation will be attached to Philip Seymour Hoffman’s final film, starring the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Mickey who tries to bury the bad news of his unpopular step-son’s death with the body; but when the boy’s mother demands the truth, Mickey finds his problems starting to stack up.

Violent, straight talking (deadpan), darkly comic, this is the debut feature from Mad Men’s John Slattery, and critics Stateside have praised his

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (12A)

In the promotional blarb for this film, allegedly “the city needs heroes” although I think the heroes might be those who don’t watch this. I grew up a bit with the Turtles. The animated series was hugely popular. The early 90s film version was pretty terrible.

Yet producers are evidently telling us is that we need a re-tread of the Turtles story, with Splinter and his four turtle heroes taking on Shredder. Add Megan Fox as April O’Neill to provide some acting eye-candy and a highly manipulated cash-in might fall flat.

Reviews haven’t been kind.

Into the Storm (12A)

The trailer for this film packed in a lot of popular references of ‘fear’ right through to the site of numerous airplanes being subsumed by the power of weather.

The Inbetweeners 2 (15)

Hugely successful on the small screen and its first big screen incarnation, the sequel sees the “ordinary-boy heroes” sent to Austria to do their thing.

TV to film cash ins have already earned a large frown thanks to Mrs Brown’s Boys debacle. This is likely to be a better film than that but I’ll leave it you how far this takes you. Opening on Wednesday to record breaking takings, clearly the boys have a massive draw.
